CHAPTER TEN
“STAY HERE,” Sean said as he stepped out of the car.
Jess wasn’t sure whether to stay in the car or go with Sean to help, but she knew she’d be of no use against an intruder. At least if she was out here, she could call the police if Sean encountered anyone.
Although, why would a burglar turn the lights on?
Still, she dug her phone out of her bag and dialed the emergency number in preparation.
But then the front door opened, as Sean was still only halfway up the path, and out walked...
Rob?
A million miles away from his bookish, gangly namesake character in Sean’s books, Rob was just as handsome as Sean, but in a more classic, clean-cut-executive kind of way—taller, blonder, more polished. Right now, though, he looked a mess. Even from the car she could tell he was upset, from the way he ran his hands through his hair, to the way he embraced his brother with a stiff hug—hanging on for much longer than was socially acceptable.
Before she knew it, Jess was out of the car and running up the path.
“Rob? Are you okay? Is Hailey okay?”
“Jess?” Rob looked up, startled.
“Let’s all go inside and get some coffee going, yeah?” Sean suggested.
Rob disappeared without explanation once they were inside the house and then came the sound of water running—Rob was showering.
“What’s going on?” she hissed in a whisper to Sean, who was making coffee.
Sean shrugged. “I don’t know. Last I heard they were in Rome, but not having much fun because of the weather.”
“Where’s Hailey?”
“I don’t know.”
“Is she okay?”
Sean banged a cup down on the counter. “Jess, I know as much as you do. Let’s wait for Rob to tell us what’s going on.”
Jess perched on the edge of a chair, her entire body tense. All her anxiety from the convention, about what was going on between Sean and Rachel, vanished in her worry about Hailey. She and Hailey were not just coworkers, they were good friends. If something had happened to her...
She and Sean sat in silence, hands around their mugs of coffee, and listened as the shower turned off and doors in the house opened and closed.
Rob finally appeared in clean clothes and with wet hair. He grabbed the coffee Sean had left out and slowly walked over to the table where they sat, pulling out a chair and slumping down into it.
As if knowing her master needed comfort, Suzie materialized, nuzzling her head into Rob’s lap. Rob began patting her automatically.
“So,” Sean began after the three of them had sat in silence for long enough. “What happened?”
“We’re getting a divorce,” Rob pronounced with doom, his eyes unfocused.
Jess felt a bubble of hysterical laughter rise in her throat. Was that it? She’d been imagining a car accident, kidnapping, a terrorist attack. Working out how to arrange for a body to be returned to Australia from Italy. She coughed to clear her inappropriate reaction and reached for Rob’s hand.
“Where’s Hailey, Rob?” she asked, as gently as she could.
